Coated paperboard is a substrate in the packaging industry that is incredibly versatile, able to be used for a variety of intricate and unique package designs.

What types of paperboard can you choose from?

What is a Coated Paperboard Substrate? 

Most paperboards are coated with a thin layer of kaolin clay to improve print performance. Sometimes they’re coated with polyethylene (PE) resin to improve wet resistance.

These paperboards are more often than not made up of recycled fibers — often a top-fly of white fibers. 

Most popular coated paperboard types: 

  • Coated recycled board
  • Bleached paperboard 
  • Coated unbleached kraft (CUK)
  • MET-PET board (giving the box a metallic, shiny finish) 

1. Coated Recycled Paperboard

This is the most common type of paperboard substrate. It’s used for a variety of purposes: 

  • Dry foods (noodles) 
  • Detergents, cleaners, and soaps 
  • Paper products (tissues and napkins)
  • Cake mixes 
  • Hardware 

The recycled material is often sourced from post-use products and leftover paper from manufacturing facilities. 

2. Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS)

Made from a furnish containing 80% virgin bleached wood pulp, this premium bleached paperboard is one of the most popular in the United States. Its coating is made up of kaolin clay and PE. 

SBS is also widely used in all sorts of industries, from medical packaging to cosmetics, food, and retail (especially for stand-up displays).  

3. Non-Bending Chipboard

These boxes have a rigid structure that does not fold or break down for more ergonomic shipping. They’re made from recycled materials and offer plenty of protection due to the thickness of the paperboard. 

This is the perfect option for small luxury goods, like jewelry and electronics.

During the design process, the chipboard is cut and assembled into a specific shape, overlaid with a paper wrap that can be foil-stamped, printed, or finished with a variety of methods. 

4. Coated Unbleached Kraft (CUK)

This paperboard is coated with a thin layer of kaolin clay to make it easier to print designs on.

It’s often produced from 100% recycled material (cardboard, newspapers, older containers, etc.).
